I have the BlueShield of California HMO through my employer, and I am wondering how do I go about seeing a dermatologist? Do I ask my physician to refer me to one or do I talk to the HMO directly? How much would it cost, on average? How do I go to a dermatologist?
All HMO's require a referral, because a dermatologist is considered a specialist and will cost more than it does to see a general practitioner. Sometimes you can just call your doctor (depending on how well they know you) and ask them to fax a referral to the specialist you want to see.
The HMO will pay based on whether or not they believe the visit is ';medically necessary';. So make sure the referral is well written and makes it clear that you've exhausted all options with your regular doctor.
A dermatologist doesn't always cost more so call around. You might be able to find one for $100 or less for a visit. If you find it to be out of your price range you can join an online forum related specifically to whatever your concern is. There are forums that specialize in acne, rosacea, etc...How do I go to a dermatologist?
You call a dermatologist office that takes Blue Shield insurance and then make an appointment.
Just call on that is in your HMO. You don't usually need a referral, but you can call your HMO to find out. It costs about the same as a regular doctor. I used to work in a skin care clinic. Perhaps you could post your problem and save some money?
I think with an HMO you need a referral from your regular doctor. PPO plans you just go straight to a doctor. No idea on price, but your plan probably specifies what percentage you are liable for.
Hi
Most likely you will need to get referred from your GP. Some specialists will take non-referrals but I wouldnt risk it. Depending whether or not you are on a health care system, depends on how much you pay. You will be looking at paying approximately $100-$200 just for a consultation
